Happy New Year from the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) Board of Directors. I hope 2018 is a great year for all.
We are just starting our 2018 legislative session. I urge you to make contact with your local legislators now. Introduce yourself and tell them you will be contacting them about issues important to ISPA members and law enforcement in general. Some issues we will be watching this year include: opioid, heroin and prescription drug abuse and provisions to ensure the proper and safe use of antidotes; mental health funding and its impact on law enforcement; and any attempt to change our pension system. THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC IN IOWA

Iowa is now facing the opioid epidemic that has been slowly moving across the United States from the east coast. With increased numbers of overdose cases and deaths within our communities, we must find a way to slow this epidemic down.
The opioid epidemic is not scheduled to peak in Iowa for another 3–5 years. Like a hurricane, it is slowly making its way westward across the state. Unfortunately, the issues surrounding opioids and heroin has now reached all four corners of Iowa, and the number of cases involving opioids continues to grow.

PURPLE HEART AWARD NOMINATIONS
The Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) Purple Heart Award was developed in 2013 for the purpose of honoring extraordinary Iowa peace officers who have been seriously wounded or killed in the line of duty as a result of a combat incident.
In addition, the award may be conferred if an injury was averted by body armor. This award will be given in all cases resulting in line of duty death, but will otherwise be limited to those cases involving an attack by an assailant or the performance of an act of valor.
